Networking Tips

Every business is a people business; people are the ones buying, selling, operating, interacting with, and performing all the other functions of the business, from owner to client, not relegated to technology. After speaking with thousands of people at various professional events there are a few suggestions I would like to share about networking;

“We all want to be special”

While I may intellectually understand that my information will be added to your contact list, database, spreadsheet, etc., emotionally it never feels good to be told so. At least put up the pretense that I am unique, and special, and am the only one you are looking to work with. Telling someone (a lender, a realtor, an inspector, etc.) that you’re building a list and will add their name to it, is like telling a person you’re asking on a date that you’ll add them to your list.

“Are you what I’m looking for?”

By nature of my profession the question I am asked all the time is “are you an HML or a PML?”, and when I respond about being an HML (the difference between the two is for another time, and another discussion) many people’s eyes glaze over and they simply walk away. If nothing else, there is such a thing as manners, and saying good bye or wishing me a good day before walking away. On the other hand I may have a contact for you who may be exactly what you need, but you will never know without taking the time to speak with me.

“Facebook friends”

After sending a friend request to someone on Facebook, take the time to introduce yourself personally when the opportunity presents itself. Sending a friend request to someone on Facebook and then disregarding them in person leaves a poor impression. Even better; first meet someone face to face, and then friend them on Facebook AFTER meeting them.
